At South Mountain Yoga we teach and practice Anusara-style hatha yoga. Anusara (a-nu-sar-a) is a Sanskrit word that means "flowing with Grace". Founded by master teacher John Friend in 1997, Anusara Yoga¨ is a powerful hatha yoga system that unifies a philosophy of intrinsic Goodness with Universal Principles of AlignmentTM. It is an exceptionally therapeutic, sophisticated, and athletic practice that cultivates confidence and joy. For more information on Anusara and John Friend, go to www.anusara.com.
All our teachers are compassionate, highly skilled interpreters of the beautiful system that is Anusara. We love yoga and love to share it with others! Click here for kid's teachers.
| Emma Magenta, Director of SMY, Certified Anusara Yoga Teacher
Emma Magenta took her first yoga class in New York City in 1997. "I thought it was really strange and wonderful and fitted me perfectly. When we chanted Om, I thought, 'Yoga has singing--I love to sing!' When we reclined at the end of class, I thought, 'Yoga has resting--I love to rest!' Later, I took an Anusara Yoga class and was blown away to hear the teacher say that Life is Good, that we are all intrinsically Good, and that yoga is a way to experience our Goodness. 'Amazing--I believe that too!' After ten years of teaching Anusara Yoga, I believe it more than ever."
Emma Magenta's background: "I grew up on a sheep farm in the Flint Hills of Kansas. I attended Bryn Mawr College and the Eastern School of Acupuncture. I've spent many, many hours studying yoga and how to teach it with Anusara Yoga Founder John Friend. I've studied yoga philosophy with Professor Douglas Brooks of the University of Rochester, and meditation with Paul Muller-Ortega."
"I love the yoga of cooking, eating, laughing with loved ones, singing, being outside, walking, reading, seeing movies, going swimming, being married, and that great feeling you get after all your chores are done."
This year Emma is proud to be one of the Ambassadors for the lululemon Showroom in Summit.

| Amanda Marra, SMY Teacher Certificate
Amanda took her first yoga class when she was 12 years old. She didn't think much of it at the time, but the seed had been planted. Amanda returned to yoga in 2005 for its physical benefits at a hatha/vinyasa class offered in her local gym. Eventually, a friend brought her to an Anusara class where she immediately fell in love with the heart-centered theme woven throughout the practice. With much encouragement and support from her teacher, Emma Magenta, Amanda enrolled in her first Anusara Immersion in March 2008, then Teacher Training in June 2009, both led by Emma and Christy Burnette.
Through her never-ending learning experiences, Amanda has had the privilege of studying under many truly amazing teachers, including Anusara Founder John Friend. Amanda strives to create a playful and supportive environment for her students on many levels. She believes that yoga practice extends from the mat into everyday life and hopes to help others cultivate that experience for themselves.

| Nicole Michaelson Traum, Anusara Inspired
Nicole was immersed in yoga from her very first class. In 2000, she was literally dragged to the Ananda Ashram by friends to help deal with stress. Being a very spiritual person she was both scared and intrigued by what yoga had to offer her. She has studied religion and philosphy, and at one time attended Union Seminary in NYC. In 2003, after practicing with a tape at home and attending random classes in NYC, Nicole began taking Anusara Yoga classes where she began to transform physically, emotionally and spiritually. That personal transformation was so profound that it led her to complete a teacher training in 2006 with Vishali Varga. Since completing her training, Nicole teaches classes in hopes of making people feel more comfortable with who they already are -- letting yoga enhance their inherent beauty (inside and out). She continues her studies with such teachers as John Friend, Emma Magenta, Ross Rayburn, Sianna Sherman, Naime Jezzeney and Noah Maze. Nicole is an Anusara-Inspired teacher who lives in Montclair, NJ with her husband, Jared. |
